What is Pilates?
Initially named "Contrology" by creator Joseph Pilates, it was developed in Germany during WWII for injured soldiers bedridden in the medical tent. This allowed for a very specific way of exercising whilst laying down or seated. It was popularized in America when Joseph moved to NYC, and is now a method of exercise all over the world. Its name change to "Pilates" came after Joseph's death.
Pilates is considered a low-impact, mind-body form of exercise. Because it's low-impact on joints, it's fantastic for those with any sort of neck, spine, shoulder, wrist, hip, or knee issues. Mind-body connection is something that is learned, creating neural pathways from the brain to a part of the body you may not have ever thought you could control. This connection extends to muscles, tendons, ligaments, and breath. When these connections are created you're able to move mindfully, safeguarding against injury when doing just about anything. For this reason alone, Pilates is suitable and highly encouraged for any and all persons.
Maintaining the proper alignment of the skeleton is a crucial aspect of Pilates. Clients learn to connect to and strengthen the core and stabilizing muscles holding the skeleton together, thus maintaining alignment through all forms of movement, throughout your lifetime! This leads to posture correction along with many other corrections as a default, and seriously increased core strength.
Why Pilates?
If you suffer from contraindications such as osteoporosis, scoliosis, pregnancy etc., have had knee or hip replacements, suffer from carpal tunnel or kyphosis due to excessive hours on the computer, or are recovering from any sort of injury affecting your ability to move albeit exercise, Pilates is the answer! There are a plethora of movements that can be done laying down, on your side, or seated. With Pilates props or apparatuses resistance and/or support can be added, strengthening the body even whilst healing or adapting to a circumstance or contraindication.
If all seems good and well, Pilates is a great way to cross train if you typically just do cardio or weight training. Not only will learning to move mindfully put you at less risk of injuring yourself at the gym when pushing or pulling heavy weights, but skeletal alignment and strong stabilizing muscles will also protect your joints during cardio.
If all human movement begins with either the stabilization or mobilization of the spine, learning how to properly engage your core not only future-proofs your spine, but also aids in the mobility of your joints and flexibility of your muscles.
"If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old; if it is completely flexible at 60, you are young."
